Handwriting in Pencil
Melville’s handwriting in pencil is particularly difficult to read. While most of the pencil letterforms and letter sequences may take on roughly the same appearance as those in ink, they are often minimized, reduced to the essential lines, and in many cases, letters are absent from words. His penciled words are written in haste, so one must read them differently than the carefully considered and re-drafted writing in ink.
